Nearly All Businesses and Public Spaces to Reopen in Stage 3
Public Gatherings Will Increase in Size as the Province Continues its Path to Economic Recovery
The Ontario government announced nearly all businesses and public spaces will reopen in Stage 3 of the province's reopening framework with public health and workplace safety measures and restrictions in place. As Ontario continues down the path to economic recovery, decisions on which regions will enter Stage 3 and when will be made in consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health and other health experts and based on trends of key public health indicators. DECLARATION OF EMERGENCY EXTENDED TO JULY 22
  • In consultation with the Chief Medical Officer of Health, the Ontario government has extended the provincial Declaration of Emergency under s.7.0.2(4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act to July 22, 2020.
CANADA'S ECONOMIC AND FISCAL SNAPSHOT 2020
  • On July 8, the federal Minister of Finance presented an economic and fiscal snapshot following Canada's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and delaying the 2020 federal budget in March.
  • The federal deficit is projected to hit $343.2 billion this fiscal year, comparable to spending during the Second World War. The federal debt will exceed $1.2 trillion by the end of the fiscal year.
  • Since the start of the pandemic, the federal government has spent more than $231 billion on aid packages and health and safety measures for Canadians. 
  • Encouraging signs show the worst of the economic shock is behind us as the economy gradually reopens. While there is a major deficit, Canada is still expected to maintain its low debt advantage among G7 countries. More details here.

The Ontario government is continuing to seek advice and input from people and organizations on modernizing Ontario's Capital Markets and supporting economic growth and job creation with the posting of the  Capital Markets Modernization Taskforce initial consultation report . Read more here
Ontario Expanding Access to the Modern Digital Economy
Application intake for broadband and cellular program opens today
The Ontario government is expanding access to reliable broadband and cellular service in underserved and unserved parts of the province. The application intake for the $150 million Improving Connectivity for Ontario program (ICON) opens today. This funding will help drive economic investment and job creation across the province, while allowing more people to work from home more efficiently, engage in online learning, and connect with family and friends. Ontario Focusses on Renewal, Growth, and Economic Recovery
Today, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, issued the following statement on Statistics Canada's monthly employment release:
"Today's employment numbers are an indication that Ontario's economy is beginning to stabilize as we continue to safely and gradually reopen the province. According to Statistics Canada, employment in Ontario increased by 377,900 in June, including an increase of 66,200 manufacturing jobs. But the job numbers are much more than a statistic, they represent, families, business owners and workers back at work and contributing to Ontario's economic recovery. Read more here
Government of Canada Extends Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS)
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the Government of Canada plans to extend the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) to December 2020.
