A Message from Dana Burdenuk, General Manager:

DanaBurdenuk250

Good afternoon,

I recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Jason Bavington of Midnight Illusions Ltd. for the DUX Local City Guide Video Blog to share how our team here at CWCC has creatively and effectively supported our members through COVID and beyond. I had a lot of fun chatting with Jason - check out our video here!

In July, Chambers of Commerce and Boards of Trade across the country launched Canada United, a nationwide small and local business campaign encouraging Canadians to buy local.

Canada United is offering small business relief grants of up to $5,000 to help small Canadian businesses with recovery efforts as a result of COVID-19. The grant funds will grow over the next several weeks as every video watched and social post liked from Canada United will result in a 5¢ contribution from RBC and other partners. Funds can be used for PPE, renovations, or e-commerce capabilities. Let's spread the word and show our local businesses some love! Visit GoCanadaUnited.ca for more info. #CanadaUnited

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me any time with questions or comments at chamber@cwchamber.ca.

Keep healthy and please stay connected!

Canadian Economic Dashboard and COVID-19 Update
After increasing by nearly one million in June, employment rose by 419,000 in July as businesses and workplaces affected by COVID-19-related restrictions continued to reopen. Gains in July were concentrated in part-time work and among women, with almost one-half of the net increase reflecting higher employment in wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food services. Government of Canada temporarily sets a minimum unemployment rate for the Employment Insurance program
Since the beginning of the pandemic the Government of Canada has taken action to provide Canadians with the health and financial support needed to help contain the spread of COVID-19. Since it was launched, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) has been an important income support for over 8.5 million Canadians and their families, who have had to stop working due to the pandemic. As the country continues to gradually and safely restart the economy, over 1.6 million Canadians have been able to return to work. However, we know that not all sectors are re-opening at the same pace. That’s why the Government is preparing to transition as many Canadians as possible back to the Employment Insurance (EI) system at the end of month. Read more here
Canadian Chamber of Commerce Response To The Port Of Montreal Strike
We have been actively engaged with ministers’ offices on behalf of our members on the urgent need for a resolution to the Port of Montreal strike given the current economic climate. We, along with other industry associations, have called on the federal Minister of Labour to facilitate a resolution of the negotiations between the longshoremen and the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) to ensure the continuation of port activities. This issue requires the government’s full attention to preserve jobs and protect Canada’s economy. We continue to monitor the situation closely and engage with government and industry.
